It is okay to try on some wedding gowns alone so you get a picture of what you are interested in. You don’t have to decide on your gown all by yourself, just narrow down a selection of favorites before you bring in other opinions. This way your friends and family can help you pick among your favorites and aren’t introducing their own idea of what they think you should be wearing. You and your bridal consultant should be in the driver’s seat. The more people you have to please, the harder it is.
Next Week: Limit how many people you bring with you
It is hard to focus your attention when you are upset or hungry. Have a snack before you arrive to your appointment so you aren’t thinking “can I take this thing off so I can go eat.” If you have had a bad experience at one appointment earlier in the day it can be easy to bring that baggage to your next appointment. Take some time to relax; this should be a fun and happy experience.
Next Week: Do some reconnaissance
Know how much you are willing to spend on your wedding gown. Your bridal consultant should be able to keep you close to your budget. Don’t forget about shipping, tax, alterations, extra charges for changes and special add-ons. It might not be a bad idea to have an absolute ceiling to your budget (just in case you need a little wiggle room).
Next Week: Be in a positive state of mind and body
Have a little bit of an idea of what you are looking for. Chances are you have already done a Google search and kind of know what you are leaning toward. Create a “Bridal Bible” for all the images and magazine clippings of things that you like or even dislike, and don’t be afraid to take this with you to your first bridal gown appointment. A good bridal consultant should be able to find gowns with similar design elements that you are interested in.
Next week: Have a budget in mind.
To expect the best service possible ALWAYS make an appointment to try on wedding gowns. In some bridal shops you MUST make an appointment. This assures that you have your bridal consultant to yourself and an uninterrupted allotment of time. You shouldn’t have to be rushed. If making an appointment to try on gowns has slipped your mind, you should call ahead first to make sure that someone would be available to help you. It can be stressful to drive 2 hours to try on a dress only to find out that they are booked and have no fitting rooms.
Next Week: What are you interested in?
Nothing is worse than finding the dream dress and hearing that you can’t get it in time for your wedding. Be aware that most bridal shops do not keep a stock of dresses in the back for you to have any size you want. When you order your gown, in most cases it will have to be made to order. Usually about 9 months to a year before your wedding date is a safe time frame to purchase your gown. This DOES depend on the designer so it may be best to find out what kind of shipping time to expect, and most bridal shops should be able to give you a time estimate.
